The Evil Chair

Recently, I changed my practice to focus on mental health and stress reduction. Unfortunately, it has not all been deep breathing and downward dogs.

 

Whereas before I was running around from patient to patient, I am now spending most of my day sitting in a chair. As a result, I am noticing that I am rapidly developing a hunched back, shrinking gluteals and piriformis, as well as tighter hamstrings and psoas muscles.

 

In fact, I am turning into the letter C!

 

Every time I get up, I feel stiff all over!

 

Well, the other day one of my patients inspired me. As an IT guy, he found that what saved his back at work was sitting on an exercise ball.

 

Genius.

 

I had been planning to do the same thing for … oh I dunno … say 7 years now. Well, there is no time like the present!

So yesterday morning I brought my already inflated exercise ball to the office. The wide-eyed kids waiting to see the Paediatrician thought it was super cool.

 

I spent the day sitting on it. By the end of the day, I was more aware of my posture and was no longer stiff!

 

It’s amazing how one small tweak can lead to a big change and how sometimes, we know what to do, we just need to do it.
