Hi! My name is Shailla Vaidya and I am physician and yoga therapist practicing Mind-Body Medicine in Toronto, Canada.
For over 10 years, I practiced Family and Emergency Medicine in Southern Ontario. I have also practiced in our isolated First Nation Communities, with street involved youth in downtown Toronto, and with suburban families trying to balance work and life. I saw first-hand the effects of stress, poor nutrition, and lifestyle factors on my patients' health. Working in a dysfunctional system, I too experienced the effects stress had on my health! So I strengthened my yoga practice. Experiencing its positive effects on me, I began to teach my stressed patients the same techniques I was using to their benefit!
Hoping to improve how we practice Medicine, I pursued a Master's in Public Health at Harvard University. I learned from many world leaders innovating change. Inspired, I returned home to lead health care teams to improve safety, access, and to deliver more effective, patient-centred care. We also established medical group visits to increase social connection and peer support. But leading change was not easy. I learned a lot about people, politics and power.
Despite my hard work, the toxic environment in which I was working took its toll on my health. After slogging away in my medical career, I was completely burned out and I hardly recognized myself. Thankfully, my yoga practice gave me respite and clarity. I was reminded of my initial intention in studying medicine - to combine the powerful Eastern Practices with Western Medicine, in a scientifically-sound way.
So I took the opportunity to further my studies in Yoga and Ayurveda. I travelled to India to study with the Mohans of Svastha Yoga and Ayurveda, in the tradition of Krishnamacharya. I re-learned many of the traditions I had been taught in my younger days, healing myself, so I could get back to healing others.
I spent the next few years writing and teaching a program for stress and burnout recovery. It was a really rewarding way to bring creativity back to my medical practice and to watch people flourish.
Then in 2018, the universe literally hit me on the head. I sustained a concussion secondary to a cycling accident. My world changed in an instant. Luckily, I had a strong yoga practice under my belt, and the understanding that the brain can change and heal. It gave me hope. So once again, I made lemonade, and adapted my stress program for Concussion, filling in a much need gap in health care.
Now my medical practice focuses on concussion recovery and burnout recovery. My goal is to help you regain your energy and vitality. I hope that I can help you develop clarity, compassion, and courage. Reconnecting with your true self, I hope you will find healing, and live a life of contentment.
